Dog's Death Results in Cruelty Charges for Kennel Keeper

The manager at Lakeside Kennel in Voorhees is facing seven charges of animal cruelty. The charges come after the manager allegedly failed to provide proper care for a sick dog while she was staying there. NBC10's Dawn Timmeney spoke to the dog's owner.
A New Jersey animal kennel manager is facing seven charges of animal cruelty after allegedly failing to provide proper care for a sick dog during her stay, according to the New Jersey SPCA.
John Bowling tells NBC10 his five-year-old dog Ava was healthy when he dropped her off at the Lakeside Kennel in Voorhees while his family was on vacation back in June. When he returned to pick the animal up, he says the dog was terribly sick.
"She was caved in, she lost 19 pounds in nine days," said Bowling. "My wife took her immediately to the vet and a day later she died."
The Bowling family tells NBC10 they've boarded the dog at the kennel before and never had any problems. The manager of the kennel, Bonnie Hicks, was arrested and charged with seven counts of animal cruelty on July 17. She is due in court on August 27. NBC10 spoke to Hicks on Wednesday.
"I've been here ten years and a little over a month," said Hicks. "I go above and beyond and I have video. I won't go further because my lawyer really stressed that I just not say anything."
Hicks showed NBC10 where the dog stayed and claims she even upgraded her to a newer kennel.
"It's very unfair, the way the situation turned out, to be accused of something," said Hicks.
"I want her out," said Bowling. "I think she needs to be out of there."
NBC10 also spoke with the owner of the kennel. She told NBC10, "it is very hard to be unjustly accused and to be quiet."
Finally, NBC10 contacted Charles Resnick, the attorney for Bonnie Hicks.
"When all the facts are known I believe it will appear the owner has not acted properly with regards to the care and management of the pet," said Resnick.
NBC10 also called the Evesham Veterinary Hospital where the dog was taken. They told us an autopsy was not performed and they have not determined the cause of death.
If convicted, Hicks could face up to two years and six months in jail and/or as much as $11,000 in fines. Animal Cruelty charges for NJ Kennel (video).

  1. I Believe that she is definately guilty. I am unable at this time to divulge my reasons, but it is certain she has no compassion and needs to be out of that position and NEVER allowed contact with animals again, plus should do time and be fined!!!! There should be an example made so this never happens again.

  3. I think people need to realize there's more than one side to the story and we may not be getting the full story. No MANAGER at a boarding facility is going to just let an animal perish. You all need to use your brains and see that she has been there for over TEN YEARS and if she was such a terrible person and had no compassion for animals she would have been out. Use your brains people and stop believing everything the media tells you until you have ALL the facts.
